Old Baggage It Never Too Late for a New Beginning Toni K Kief 9781530424887 Books
This book starts out with a horrific event and moves on powerfully from there. The heroine, 65, is a long-time victim of domestic abuse (brutality to the point of her husband choking her and leaving her unconscious on the floor). Yet for all her codependence, she is strong. She works as an accountant with the same firm for forty years, and in that time has hidden away small sums of her paycheck and her grocery allowance for the day she finally leaves, if she lives that long. This is the story of her living that long, and triumphing. It's more than the usual domestic abuse getaway story, because there are two plot twists that make it even more enjoyable. I also found her description of her codependency profoundly compelling. Here's an example: "The conversation brought back all of the years not only of the pain and shame, but also his fragility and my need to protect him." HIS fragility? Only those of us who've lived this life would understand, perhaps. I have to point out that this book is in serious need of copy-editing. Its many punctuation and grammatical errors are a disservice to the story. The author - who I contacted to ask about this issue - says she is working on that. I hope readers will look beyond that, because this is an authentic story of rebirth later in life.Product details

Old Baggage It Never Too Late for a New Beginning Toni K Kief 9781530424887 Books Reviews
Told in the first person, this story draws you into the psyche of the main character, an older woman who finds her breaking point and the inner courage to leave an abusive relationship. You are able to follow her journey both into her past and into her future as she learns to forgive herself and others, and to rebuild her strength through family and friendships. The writing details her thought processes and readers are guided through the central characters journey to find herself. The story is one of compassion, inspiration and acceptance.
Old Baggage totally delighted me. Why? Because Toni Kief’s story of Elizabeth Donovan gaining the strength to come out of an abusive marriage, presents something most women fail to utilize until push comes to shove--and often not until they are much older.
What is it? A coming into their own as a human being…suddenly seeing themselves for the first time as an individual with rights…recognizing that no one has the right to control them…that they can set boundaries without fear and, most of all, learn how to say “No” for the first time. This new, deeply felt transformation can prove amazing and powerful. I remember the first time I experienced it. A power surged through me, changing me into a person I never dreamed I could become.
Tony Kief’s story illustrates coming into this kind of freedom. It offers hope to readers who may be struggling with codependency issues, and imparts the courage to change.
I highly recommend her book.
I truthfully thought I didn't want to finish this when I started to read the sample. However, when I got to the end of the sample I just had to keep reading it. Having seen friends in abusive relationships, I kept thinking, "Don't you dare go back to him!"
The four stars are because there were a few annoying run-on words (asif rather than as if) and a few sentences just didn't make sense. Maybe it was just the transcription.
Overall, I would recommend the book. By the way, My "favorite" line is when he tells her that he FORGIVES her! A classic abuser's response.
This novel surprised me by the character's relentless optimism, good luck, and positive experiences. The crisis that brought about her changes occurred just before the action got under way but was revealed through the narrative. I think I would have preferred some conflict, struggle, and challenges during the course of the story because I found myself waiting for them. It felt a bit saccharine. I think someone depressed or wondering if she should leave an abusive situation would find hope and motivation in this novel and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to such a person.
Old Baggage seeped into my soul right off the bat along with the pickle juice. I was hooked. Being the same age as Lizzy and the last of 12 children, I identified with so much of the story. In the 50's and 60's, violence was a silent partner in many of my sisters lives. As a very young child, I knew I did not want any part of it when I grew up and married. I have been happily married for 42 years to a wonderful man. Yeah for Lizzy for breaking free. You will love this book no matter your age. If you are in a similar marriage, you will find many tools for escaping. Toni gently brings Lizzy through terror and loss of self, into the sunshine of a new life. I laughed, I cried and I celebrated Lizzy's journey. Well done Ms Toni. Well done.
After reading Toni Kief’s book, Mildred in Disguise With Diamonds, there was no hesitation in purchasing this one. The other was so good, I was bound to at least like this one. I was not let down!
Old Baggage, however, is a different kind of story than her Mildred book, but that isn’t to say that I like it less. It’s just a completely different setting, and her character is a completely different personality from the other book, which is good. No one wants to read the same book over and over, under different titles.
I will not give away the story, but I will say that the story is well thought out, and worded great. I can see Elisabeth, (Main Character) in my head as the story takes her on an amazing adventure.
Leaving her abusive husband behind, Elisabeth sets out, not only to find her new life, a life of freedom and hopefully a new beginning, but also her son, whom she let go of at birth, because she knew he wouldn’t be safe at home with her husband.
This story continues to build as you read on, and you can’t help but feel heavy-hearted for this courageous woman as she trails on, trying to put her broken puzzle of a life back together again.
WARNING UP FRONT! You will likely shed a tear in this one, folks. I highly recommend this great read.
