How to put school reform initiatives back on track

From one of the largest organizations of public school principals, this book exposes many misguided school-reform initiatives that are negatively impacting students and educators across the country, and recommends ways to make them more effective. Veteran educator Gerald Tirozzi addresses all the hottest school reform trends including charter schools, teacher merit pay, Race to the Top, Common Core State Standards, and more.

While some reform efforts are bringing about positive change, Tirozzi argues, many make egregious promises, lack a research base, fail to address the needs of students and educators, and utilize a "smoke and mirrors" depiction of success.

  • From NASSP, the leading association of U.S. public school administrators
  • Offers solid, actionable ideas for getting school reform back on track
  • Tirozzi is former assistant secretary of elementary and secondary education under President Clinton

This passionate, engaging book is filled with specific recommendations as to how each of the reform initiative presented can be improved upon and can lead to more meaningful school reform.

Education reform for some three decades basically has been a top-down movement driven by the country's most influential political, business and philanthropic leaders. While a persuasive case can be made that the national standards and accountability initiatives would not have had traction without the imposition of such powerful players, the disconnect with on-the ground local teachers, principals, and school board members who must implement the proposed reforms has seriously compromised chances for sustained change.
The ongoing public dialogue and debate has been dominated by those external to everyday classroom teaching and learning experiences. Indeed, the blanket indictments of the public schools (largely predicated on decades old failures of our largest and most visible urban school systems) have sorely eroded the morale of public school employees. Too few efforts have been made to bridge the chasm between the influential top-down drivers of reform and the local educators who must implement the desired changes.
The value of Gerry Tirozzi's book is that it is one of a handful of published efforts to present the perspectives of the practitioners in the field. These perspectives have been egregiously missing in the debate and literature about the education reform movement. Tirozzi's unique rich and diverse experience at every level of the public school enterprise and his long-standing status as a change agent in his many leadership roles give him special credibility to represent the practitioner's point of view. While one might quibble with some of his points and accuse him of some defensiveness in light of some of public education's shortcomings, the country can gain invaluable understanding of the concerns of so many of teachers and school people from reading his book. In fact, the future of the reform movement and public education itself may well be predicated on Presidents, Governors, CEOs, foundation heads, and prominent policy makers at all levels, gaining greater understanding of the concerns of grassroots educators which Gerry Tirozzi so forcefully and effectively articulates.

This was great. I found the book to be a very insightful read. I hope teachers and legislators take the
time to understand the message!
In this book, Gerry Tirozzi shares his views with sincerity and aplomb. His lifelong and courageous service to public education provides an anchor for the skepticism he expresses toward a special kind of so-called reformers. A leader who has dedicated his career to equity and excellence in education, Tirozzi deserves to be heard. A good read.
Gerry Tirozzi has done it all during his illustrious career in education as a teacher, principal, superintendent, state chief, college president, federal official, and national association leader. Now you can add "author" to this list of accomplishments. Tirozzi provides in this treatise an important perspective for moving education forward during these turbulent times of change and challenge. He lays out important arguments for enhancing the profession and, ultimately and most importantly, improving student learning. Regardless of where you stand on the issues, this is a must-read for anyone engaged in the education reform policy debate.

This was a great read and should be read by all public educators and those that impact education policy on all levels. Dr. Tirozzi's support of public education in an age of "teacher bashing" is very welcome. I have devoted my entire career to public education and in those years I have heard time and time again from local and state policy makers that our schools are failing. Of course not many if any of them ever set foot in schools on a regular basis or have any background to back up their statements. Dr. Tirozzi's support of educators and his call to take back our profession should be heard nationwide!

I couldn't put this book down! Every page I read there was something that I could relate to my career as a public educator. During my days as a superintendent one of the things I always asked my staff when they came to me with an issue was "Ok - What should we do about this?" I appreciated the fact that his book gave recommendations for many of the issues we face today. On top of that many of those recommendations asked for collaborative communication on all levels. Something that is sorely missed in many of today's reform methods. Dr. Tirozzi's recommendations were based on knowledge that comes from a long career in education and common sense which is welcome in an age of reform where as the Education Policy Institute stated in their 1996 report "Rarely in the history of education have so many been so willing to risk so much on the basis of so little evidence."

I will be recommending this book to any and all educators, local and state policy makers, friends, and family (really anyone I come in contact with).
