FINAL DECISION: A revised old favorite, MOUNTAIN MAN provides all the classic Diana Palmer tropes. Virginal heroine, woman hating hero who misunderstands and treats the heroine poorly because of it. The characters, however, make this a good read.THE STORY: Nicole White comes to Montana with her boss for work. They are staying with her bosses older brother who hates women after being burned by a society girl. Winthrop Christopher cannot forget being betrayed and yet he cannot forget Nicole. What he doesn't know is that Nicole comes from a rich family herself but has decided to make it on her own. Winthrop feel betrayed when he discovers Nicole's secret, he feels betrayed again.
OPINION: Diana Palmer writes a particular type of hero and heroine. The formula doesn't vary a tremendous amount, but what makes her books interesting are the individual characters that she creates within those formulas. I like this book because the hero and heroine have a sweet connection. Winthrop has feelings for Nicole but doesn't want to admit it. In fact, he fights hard against it. While he is somewhat of a jerk at times, his behavior is not unforgivable. The book also has a good sense of place and an admiration for the western land. No one does the modern western ranchers and farmers better than Palmer.
WORTH MENTIONING: MOUNTAIN MAN is a revised version of WOMAN HATER.
CONNECTED BOOKS: MOUNTAIN MAN is a standalone.

Great book. A real look into the 1800s Mountain Man, the Indian tribes of the Northwest, and the hardship of the American Wild West. Not PC but a real look back in time. Solid read. And, for those interested, this book was based on a real person named "Liver Eatin Johnson" who is part of a museum in Cody, WY.
This is a detailed look at the life of a mountain man, inspired by Jeremiah Johnson. It tells of the solitude, danger and tricks used to survive in the West in the mid-19th century. These tricks included remaining sane by singing while riding across the mountain slopes. The story includes vengeance against the Crows for killing his Indian wife and unborn son. This is an unusual lifestyle for someone to travel and trap by himself for months at a time to gain an income to support himself. This was a truly legendary portion of the opening of the American West. It ends with civilization moving into the West and destroying the frontier that attracted such independent men.
Wow. I finished this book a while ago and have since read other books (including The Revenant, by Michael Punke, the story of the same Hugh Glass that gets mentioned often in this book). I can't stop thinking of Mountain Man!! This is easily one of the top 3 novels I have ever read!! EVER. And I'm already pining for a reread.
I love reading books I can get totally submerged in, feeling like I'm there, in that time and place. The descriptions in this book, of the mountains and birds and flowers, of the brutality and dangers of the frontier, of the love this man had for the native woman he took as his wife.... I was right there!! I literally cried like a baby at times. Some of the passages simply took my breath away (to the point where I would take a minute, with hand to my heart, and sigh at the beauty and sadness of it all). And at the end, I felt such a profound sadness, as Sam did, at the inevitable "taming" of the wild frontier.
This a "wild west romance" if there ever was one, full of beauty and brutality and heartache. Highly, highly recommended.
The romantic notions of the wild men of the West are certainly mostly fiction, and yet I can't help but be attracted the these stories. This one contains all of the familiar themes, ones clearly sourced in Jeremiah Johnson and other similar works. The inclusion of so many themes of environmental catastrophe and the general depressing senseless march of men toward the destruction of their own planet is hard to read, but really seems relevant now. I read a lot of books on kindle and find it harder and harder to find quality using this platform, so a book like this is especially appreciated.
I chose this book because I like reading how life was for mountain men, Indians and what the land and nature was like in the 1800's after the revolution and before the civil war. Based on the "Crow Killer" historical novel with minor twists on the theme and so very much more descriptive. If you like stories about the earthy and violent life in those times and also understand and like classical music and great prosaic descriptions of the land and nature, you will love this book! I happened to study classical music in my youth, love hiking and hunting, nature and the creatures in it, so I was riveted. It is also a very moral, almost religious book while definitely not politically correct, but true to the thinking and verbiage of the times. The conversion from print to kindle is in need of help. The typos are a small nuisance but should be corrected just for pride in quality of writing, although the cost is only a mere $2.99! Some of the writing is so artistic, the book does not deserve such poor conversion. Although the story seems to drag somewhat in places where the figures of speech using classical music as a vehicle are sometimes overdone, I highly recommend this novel to anyone whose interest has been peaked so far. Don't worry, this writing is not as graphic as the Crow Killer. If you read the historical novel first, you will enjoy this as kind of a page turning sequel. Enjoy!
I really looked forward to reading this book, but was rather disappointed with it. I have read almost all her books and this one just didn't do it for me.
Another thing I want to say is that I really hate the way they are taking her old books and putting new titles on them. I don't mind paying for a good
book, but hate having to pay twice for the same book. Really need to read the details closely so that this doesn't happen.
